Philip Hyde had a long association with Yosemite before meeting Ansel Adams. Philip Hyde first visited Yosemite on a 1938 Boy Scouts backpack and returned nearly every year, often with his father Leland Hyde and brother David Lee Hyde, who witnessed Philip Hyde’s first fine art landscape photograph in 1942 of Shadow Creek in the Minarets Wilderness, now the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Philip Hyde first met Ansel Adams in 1946 in the summer session of Ansel Adams’ new photography department at the California School of Fine Arts now the San Francisco Art Institute. Philip Hyde later taught Ansel Adams Gallery Workshops for many years beginning in the mid 1970's after Best's Studio was renamed the Ansel Adams Gallery.
