Monument Valley from the top of Mitchell Mesa, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Utah - Arizona, 1963. Center double spread in "Navajo Wildlands: As Long As The Rivers Shall Run by Stephen C Jett and Philip Hyde, edited by Kenneth Brower, Sierra Club Exhibit Format Series, 1967. While the digital era has made it easier to make good outdoor photographs, in earlier times, it was easier to gain access to the landscape. Today, nobody is allowed on top of any of the Buttes in Monument Valley without a permit. This is good for the Navajo and conservation of the land for future generations. Though, it is unfortunate that many of the West's most beautiful landscpaes are much harder to experience first hand.
