Merced River, Half Dome, Fall Cottonwoods, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada, California 1969. A later photograph from the same location was published in "The Range of Light" by Philip Hyde. This image was widely published and exhibited. Long before meeting Ansel Adams, Philip Hyde first visited Yosemite on a 1938 Boy Scouts backpack and returned nearly every year, often with his father Leland Hyde and brother David Lee Hyde, who witnessed Philip Hyde’s first fine art landscape photograph in 1942 of Shadow Creek in the Minarets Wilderness, now the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Philip Hyde first met Ansel Adams in the 1946 summer session at the California School of Fine Arts now the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1949, Ansel Adams helped Ardis and Philip Hyde land the job of summer caretakers of the Sierra Club Parson's Lodge, Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite. Starting in the mid 1970s when Best's Studio became the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley, Philip Hyde taught Ansel Adams Gallery Workshops for many years.
