Cathedral in the Desert (Vertical), Glen Canyon, Utah, 1964, Before “Lake” Powell. Named as one of the top 100 photographs of the 20th Century by American Photo Magazine. Cathedral in the Desert remains a symbol of wilderness lost when conservation efforts waver. See also the 1951 vintage photograph, "Steamboat Rock," in Black and White Portfolio One for More on the Story of How David Brower led the Sierra Club and a coalition of environmental groups in a battle to keep dams out of the National Park System in Dinosaur National Monument. To save Dinosaur, Brower proved that Glen Canyon Dam was a better alternative, but he regretted the sacrifice later when he first explored Glen Canyon with Ardis and Philip Hyde, Eliot Porter, Richard Norgaard and others on river trips in 1958, 1962 and 1964. Original prints in many gallery exhibitions, stock widely published including a poster by the Glen Canyon Institute and in the 2009 book, Resurrection: Glen Canyon and a New Vision for the West by Annette McGivney and James Kay.
